R. Nelson Parrish; Color Theorist

August 9, 2012

Renowned color theorist and Soul Poles family member R. Nelson Parrish made his way east, from Santa Barbara, to Park City last week to wrap up his exhibition at the Kimball Art Center, affectionately named Color/Fast. Nelson has a propensity for creating what he calls "racing stripes" on a variety of mediums. His latest installment at Kimball consisted mostly of striped totems such as this...
Nelson's trip was not "soulely" for his art exhibition though, he also spent plenty of time with us in the shop doing this...
As we said, Nelson likes racing stripes and that's what he was here for; painting racing stripes on his beautiful rendition of the '12-'13 Soul Poles LTD. Edition Soul. If you are unaware, Nelson will be doing a new rendition of the LTD. every year for the foreseeable future. Last years looked as such...
This years' is not at all similar but no less striking. Below are more pictures of Nelson at work and if this post left you hungry for more info on our favorite color theorist/artist then please visit his website at http://www.rnelsonparrish.com/

Soul Update: 7/31/12

July 31, 2012

After a short hiatus while waiting for our parts to arrive, the shop ninjas are back in action down in the shop. This marks the beginning of phase 3 for us at Soul Poles, or more specifically, the final phase! The glue guns are hot, the straps and caps are assembled onto the grips, and our favorite artist, R. Nelson Parrish, is in the shop ready to paint your LTD. Edition Soul Poles. (More on Nelson to come) As we work through this last phase we are completing our final quality control stage before the Soul Poles reach you as well. Each and every pair is carefully examined for the smallest of imperfections at nearly every stage, and in this last stage a label will be added so you know exactly who has looked over your poles to insure that they're of the utmost quality for you. Trust me, we wouldn't put our name on it if we weren't proud of what we are making. As stated in our previous post, we have changed sources of our bamboo since last year in order to preserve the integrity of our product, and just as we thought, it was for the better. We can't help but exclaim nearly every five minutes how awesome these new poles are and can't wait for you to do the same. If you are as antsy as us for the coming season and the arrival of your new Soul Poles, I can tell you that the wait is nearing an end. In the meantime, here are just a couple pictures of phase 3 for you to enjoy while you wait, and if that doesn't satiate your need to see what's happening, then stop by the shop for yourself and we'll give you a full tour.

Stay tuned for our next post where we'll tell you all about The Man, The Myth, The Legend: R. Nelson Parrish as he paints the new LTD. Edition Soul Pole for the '12-'13 season.

Soul Quest

July 24, 2012

Back in February, Soul Poles Principal Creative and co-founder Bryon Friedman embarked on a journey to the far east with photographer Jonas Jungblut to find a more reliable source for our bamboo. In order to help our costs and to cut down on waste, Bryon set out with detailed specifications for the bamboo farmers to use when harvesting Soul Pole bamboo including fair working conditions and sustainable practices. After touring the countryside and taking in the sights as well as the culture, a deal was struck with a family that has been in the bamboo business for many generations. This has insured that Soul Poles is supplied with quality bamboo that meets our specs. On the other hand, not only was this a business trip but also an opportunity to experience a country and culture very different from our own. Bryon stated that, "despite cultural generalizations, the urban areas were very free and capitalistic, whereas the rural areas may have been somewhat repressed, yet quality of life was still extremely high." It seems that leading the simple life, even in rural China, has positive impacts on the mind, body, and Soul.

Photographer Jonas Jungblut documented the trip with his camera and will be exhibiting the journey soon at the Soul Poles workshop. Find out more about Jonas at http://jonasjungblut.com/

Soul Update: 7/16/2012

July 16, 2012

The Soul Lab is in full production!

While all of you Soul followers have been enjoying summer, biking, hiking, boating, camping or the like, the Soul Pole Shop Ninjas have been hard at work creating the next batch of Soul Poles for your enjoyment in the coming winter. Starting with 10,000 pieces of cane, we have whittled down our inventory to only the best "boo" for you. The Ninjas worked so hard in fact they needed to be rewarded with a morning session at the FlowRider standing wave down in Lindon, UT. Plenty of good times and carnage ensued. Here are a few pictures of the production process as well as the landlocked surf session...
